Flash SEO
Is it Now Possible?
Flash SEO - isn't that an oxymoron? Not any more.
SEO Copy, SEO Web Development....and SEO and Flash-together at last
Flash sites are more stunning, interesting and attention grabbing than plain static websites. Flash is the medium of choice for technological websites that promotes games, music, movies, entertainment and such. However, it may seem a waste to have all that glitz and all that jazz in your site when it’s not visible to the search engines.
It has long been established that search engine spiders cannot read the text in flash embedded sites because they have been designed to search, crawl and index HTML texts. That's what SEO copy writing and the all encompassing SEO web development is for, right? And that's how we know the difference between good website designs and bad website design...right?
So, should you give up creativity and style in the name of search engine rankings? Or should you forget about ranking in the search engines in the name of art? Doesn’t seem like a fair choice for flash developers and website owners who want to put on the glitz. But then maybe, not at all!
A Dash of Flash Is Good SEO
There has been news that Google has worked with Flash and Adobe to create a new algorithm that will index text content in a flash website. Flash SEO is indeed a big step in traditional search engine optimization and is good news to flash developers and website owners that rely on flash to present their product.
SEO embossed Flash may still be in its infancy, but things are looking hopeful. Until this search engine algorithm is perfected, flash SEO may not have the same SEO freedom as HTML SEO but at least flash SEO can now be implemented, and have a fighting chance to make it to the search engine rankings.
Adobe has listed the following to make flash SEO friendly:
- Macromedia Flash Search Engine SDK
The Macromedia Flash Search Engine SDK 1.0 provides search engines with the means to search and index Macromedia Flash (SWF) movies. The swf2html utility used by the SDK extracts text and links from a Macromedia Flash SWF file, and outputs it to stdout or to an HTML document.
When a search engine deploys this SDK, users can locate relevant Flash content when searching by keyword or file type.
The Macromedia Flash Search Engine SDK is primarily designed for search engine application engineering teams. Intermediate and advanced Macromedia Flash developers may find the SDK useful for other server-based text and link extraction/conversion purposes, or for client-side testing of their Macromedia Flash content against the basic Macromedia Flash Search Engine SDK code.
Since Macromedia Flash 4, Flash has had a mechanism that will export the text within a movie into the HTML file published with a SWF file. This information, contained in the HTML of the page embedding the Macromedia Flash SWF is what a search engine looks for when indexing the page.
- Manually Add META Information
The majority of search engines search for a specific set of information located in the META tag of an HTML file. Site developers can use a text editor to add/edit this information in the HTML file that embeds the Macromedia Flash SWF file.
Since the announcement of search engines improving their algorithm to cater to flash content, Flash SEO may be the next big thing as it will be beauty plus popularity.
