Why Viral Marketing Products?

Viral marketing experts say that internet viral marketing is a single stroke of genius that goes a long way. It can promote your brand exponentially. But how does viral marketing help sell your products?

The Definition of Viral Marketing Established...so what about viral marketing products?

Let’s first differentiate a viral ad with a normal ad you see on TV, for instance. Let’s say you’re watching “Sex and the City” and on comes a commercial about the latest flavor of a popular soft drink brand. You look at the screen and see the ad. It registers on your brain and for a few seconds you note that it’s interesting.

Now, would you be enamored with the commercial so much you would want to ring your friends that very instant to tell them about the ad? Hardly. If you’re like most televiewers, you would be itching for that commercial as well as the others waiting in line to end just so you can go back to watching your favorite TV show. For you, these commercials are nothing but unwelcome interruptions in your viewing pleasure.

Not so with a viral ad. You come across (or intentionally search for is more likely) the latest Blendtec ad on YouTube, for instance. You watch it with much interest. It strikes you so much that you will remember it and want to share it with your friends. You will want to talk about it at work over coffee the next morning. You might even want to blog about it and/or bookmark it.

See the difference? Regular ads are usually something you want to get over with, while ads for viral marketing products grip your attention and make you want to share them.

Now, imagine that it’s your own viral marketing products or services people are talking, sharing and blogging about. Imagine that it’s your own ad that is at the bottom of every email that people are forwarding to each other like crazy, or that it’s your own promotional video that is on YouTube’s “Most Viewed” page.

Is your internet viral marketing campaign increasing your bottom line?

Let’s go back to Blendtec’s viral marketing campaign. Did it help sell those blenders that cost around $400 apiece? Blendtec founder,Tom Dickson, said the campaign triggered Blendtec’s massive sales. And to think the ads were created on a shoe-string budget. No wonder there are so many of those ads being spread around.

Blendtec’s brilliant “Will it Blend” campaign is a potent mix of all three qualities that an ad for viral marketing products must embody: entertaining, share-worthy, and sales generating. It gives people a reason to want to buy the product. The ad showcases the value of Blendtec: It can blend practically anything you put on it and it won’t break.

Are you now convinced of the power of viral marketing to spread the word about your business and sell your products or services?

So, now let’s talk about driving traffic to your website which is your main goal in creating your viral marketing campaign. Here are five strategies to push your viral marketing products:

Come up with articles about your product or service and allow people to reprint these on their website, newsletter, ezines (see our starting an ezine page) or eBooks. Every article must include a resource box and the option for article reprints at the bottom. Your affiliate companies (if any) must include an affiliate ID in the resource box. These are great examples of viral email marketing.

Write an eBook.
Encourage your fellow website owners to advertise on your eBook for free and in return, they will give away your eBook to visitors of their site or their ezine subscribers. You can create information viral marketing products that lead into the product or service you wish to promote, then give these away.

Give stuff away.
Aside from eBooks, you may also give away free coupons, mini courses, software programs, etc. to entice more people to spread the word about your viral marketing products. Include your own name, website and contact information on these freebies.

Search the internet for products with branding rights that you can purchase for a minimal fee and which you can give away to other people for free. There are also available programs that you can use to create your own software. Allow people to give away these freebies to their visitors who in turn will also give these away.

Get Creative.
If you have a talent for web design or know someone who does, you may create templates, graphics, etc. which you can upload to your website and be made available to your visitors. They may pass these on to other people. Include a link back to your site in the copyright notice and require your visitors to keep the copyright notice intact.

Build Links.
Set up reciprocal links on your website where people can add their link to your free website directory with a link back to your website that advertises the directory. There should be a link from your main pages to get to your directory. Linking and high page rank go hand in hand, so do not skip these very important step.

Now, before you create the next most-talked about campaign, there are some tricks you have to bear in mind to make your promotional ads truly viral and move the goods.  Here are a few things to bring you clarity on what you need to do next with your advertising:

Do the unexpected.  Make people stop in their tracks. People are used to hearing about dogs biting people; talk about people biting dogs instead and you will certainly grab attention. Also, don’t copy someone else’s viral idea; be unique.

How do you strive for the unexpected factor in creating ads for your viral marketing products? Here are valuable tips from Search Engine Guide editor and viral marketing expert  Jennifer Laycock.

Hook them with a good story. Take your cue from BMW’s BMW Films and Sony Bravia TV ads. Rather than just let the ad blab about how good the product is, create an interesting story and make it your centerpiece.

Laycock comes up with these tips on how to create an interesting and compelling story to tie in with your viral marketing products.

  1. Make the ads relevant. The ads for your viral marketing products must be something that people would want to spend time on, and improve their lives or change their outlook in some way. The BMW ad gives us hope, while the Bravia ad makes us want to experience more fun and open up to unconventional ways of thinking. “Ideas spread because they are important to the spreader… not the originator,” says Laycock.

  2. Use humor. Humor transcends race and religion. An easy way to make viral marketing products truly viral is to inject humor into your campaign. Experts say viral marketing is 100% about emotions. Humor is one of the strongest emotions we humans are equipped with. Remember the hilarious Escalator ad wherein the mechanic himself got stuck?

  3. Never, never settle for a so-so ad. Viral marketing is definitely one area where your perfectionist streak would be most useful. If you wouldn’t want to touch a particular viral ad with a 10-foot pole, don’t create it. Make ads that you yourself would want to share with your friends. Be creative.

  4. If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again. Just because your first foray into viral marketing sucked big time, never turn your back on this marketing tool. When used with the right techniques, viral marketing can explode your traffic. Give an objective look at  the viral ad you had created  and try to examine where it went wrong. Research about viral marketing to see how the experts do it and learn from them.
