What is a Forum
And Why Should I Care?

What is a Forum?

A forum is an online discussion site or can also be referred to as a modern bulletin board where users can post their ideas, advices, experiences, questions, answers and a lot more. There are thousands of forums available online that have several topics to choose from.

While they may have started as a friendly place to share views on various topics, they have quickly become a internet viral marketing hot bed. A viral marketing campaign will likely include posting in various forums as a way to increase online traffic to a particular website. As traffic grows, sales generally do too, thereby making money with forums an enticing alternative.

What is a Forum / Fast Facts

Forums can also be a good resource or reference in learning and discovering new things. Try to find a forum that has a lot of factual information.

It is also a place where people who share similar interests meet and where members can communicate to one another. Forums can create bonds between users by just simply sharing their opinions and experiences about a particular topic.

What is a Forum / The Basics

Forums differ from one another.  Most forums are free, but some charge membership fees. It is better to join forums that are free. During registration, you are required to create a user ID or nickname to be used on the forum. Other information such as e-mail address, gender, age and location may also be asked when joining.

In this way they are similar to social networking websites. Blogs, on the other hand, are usually written by an individual and they elicit participation by allowing their visitors to leave comments.

All of these online vehicles are a great way to implement affordable online marketing or viral word of mouth (see the definition of viral marketing).

Before signing up for a forum, you must first review their policies. Each forum has its own set of rules and regulations but here are general rules and policies that apply to all forums.  Basically, anything that breaches etiquette is not allowed in forums.

What is a Forum / A Place to Play Nice

Flaming or the act of being rude to other forum users is not allowable to most forums.  Content that is offending is usually deleted. In using forums, always remember that you must always stay on topic, be as polite as possible and respect other users.

Forums are composed of posters, moderators and administrators. Posters are the users who start the discussions, post replies and are often referred to as the driving force behind the forum. Moderators are users who have access to all the posts of the members and are in charge of moderating the discussions and ensure that the rules and policies are not violated.

Administrators can also act as moderators (kind of online cops). They are in charge of keeping the site in proper order and in monitoring the jobs of the moderators as well as with the technical information of the forum.

Got Emotions? ... Let 'em Out

One of the numerous features of most forums is the use of emoticons. They can serve as indicators of what a user feels at the moment of his post. Using emoticons too much might annoy other users. Only make use of them when needed.

able online marketing - viral word of mouth (see the definition of viral marketing).

Some forums allow guests to access the different topics posted, in this way, they can check it out before deciding to join the forum. There are some forums that allow guests to participate actively in the discussions, but majority of forums do not allow this.

What is a Forum / Kids Are Welcome

Everyone can use forums, even kids can use it. There a forums designed specifically to be child-friendly and are often monitored by adults to ensure online safety. Some require parental consent prior to joining. It is advised that parents or guardians check out the forums first before permitting their child to participate and make use of it.

Forums are a great way of meeting new people and learning more of the topics you are interested in. Forums can be very fun, educational and informative. You just need to remember that forums are public and everyone who has access online can read your post. Be careful in giving out your personal information.
