If you're in the process of learning all that you can about writing an effective sales letter (also known as a sales page) - I give you a lot of credit. For something that seems so simple, it is incredibly pivotal towards the whole sales process. Screw up your sales letter and you lose your patron - adios, goodbye, sayonara... probably forever.

We write our own sales copy. In fact, we write sales copy using seo web development techniques for our clients too. But if we had any trouble at all with this process - we would have no problem hiring someone else that could do this for us more effectively. Why not? We hire programmers and other technical contractors on an as needed basis. So whatever it takes to keep generating income or will better support our growing number of clients - we do.

Writing a Killer Sales Page /Grab them with a Killer Headline!

Very simply, this is the most important aspect of your sales letter. In fact, it's about 80% important. So, you will want to get your patrons attention with copy that motivates them to read the second sentence and then the third and so on... Have a boring headline, and you are ensuring that nobody will continue reading. You will also want to ensure that you relate to your patrons on a personal level - by addressing their problem or by giving them what they truly want.

Writing a Killer Sales Page / It's a Lot More Than Just One Page

Few things (if any) are as important as your sales copy. Well written sales copy has a direct correlation to your website's conversion rates (sales). That's why typical Sales Letters writer's fees are so outrageous! It's not uncommon for a successful writer to ask $10,000 to $15,000 per sales letter. Granted, a typical sales letter is 12 to 20 pages long - but that's still a lot of dollars.

Okay, so now that you understand how important well written sales copy is, let's talk about some of the mechanics of writing a killer sales page. I'll talk about just a very few of the things that can help make, or break, your sales letter.

Writing a Killer Sales Page / Are You Selling Widgets or Feelings?

Did you know that people buy from an emotional context? That is why you always hear marketers say, "sell benefits not features". This is a common sales copy ailment. It is very easy, when your selling a new service or product, to get caught up in the technical aspects of what you are selling. "This new Terraflow hardrive has 51,000 gigawaps of nano-protoplastic memory space.... whatever that means.

But when you say, "you'll never have to shop for a hard drive again" you make the same point and you target a different side of your patrons brain - the one that will actually pull out their credit card and buy. That is why you'll see so many effective sales letters start with the words "Imagine," or "Picture yourself..." This puts your patron in a completely different state of mind - that will be more effective at keeping them reading your sales letter.

Writing a Killer Sales Page / A little Respect

Another important aspect of an effective Sales Letter is YOU. One of the first questions your patron will ask, even if it's subconsciously, is why should I listen to this bozo - what do they know? So early on in your sales copy, you need to establish your own credibility. Now you don't want blast out an egotistical rant on how great you are, but you certainly need to convey why you are (humbly speaking) the best person they could possibly be listing to right now. So make sure you place a paragraph on YOU, close to the beginning of your sales letter. You may need to work and rework this text so it come across just the way you want it - but it will help big time. If you have special qualifications, a great track record, success... this is where you add all that.

Look What They're Saying About You!"

Speaking of being a success, very little is more important than well-written, strategically-placed testimonials. If you don't have testimonials in your sales copy you are wasting your time. Your potential patrons will gravitate towards testimonials - they want to see what other people think of your product or service. They'll read every word of them. And if you have included their names and a picture - wow! you have just tripled their effectiveness. You can't have too many testimonials. Just make sure that they are relevant towards what you are selling or at least boast what a great person you are or business you have.

Writing a Killer Sales Page / Format

There is a lot of debate over what is the most effective format for your sales letter: the standard big tag lines with bold text type sales letter, or, a more subdued, classy (not so in your face) type sales letter. My answer? Both. They both work well for different people and different situations. Write your sales letter using both formats and test. Test a lot - it's the only way to see what is effective for your particular product or service. I will say this though. People tend to skim read sales letters. By using bolded copy or red highlighted text for certain (important) text, studies show you can dramatically improve your sales/conversions. Now if your in, say, the funeral business, perhaps a more subdued, soft-sell approach would be better. Do what's best for your situation and test, test, and re-test.

Writing a Killer Sales Page / Build Momentum

Your sales letter should start off with a compelling headline to capture their interest. As they continue to read your well-written pros, you need to make it virtually impossible for them to stop reading. And you do this by keeping their attention and wetting their appetite for more. Remember to keep appealing to their emotions. As your sales letter progresses, it needs to build like how a good action movie builds excitement. And by the time they reach the end of the letter, they can't wait to see what the price is so they can buy.

Writing a Killer Sales Page / Should I Buy this?

This is another important point. By the time your patron gets to the end of your sales letter, they should have ZERO doubt that this product or service is EXACTLY what they have been looking for and can not live another minute without it! And you do this by including so many free extras and bonus material add-ons that the perceived value is WAY over the top of what they actually will be paying.

Writing a Killer Sales Page / Do You Mean It?

If you are not willing to give a 100% Money-Back Guarantee, forget it. Buying online is still a little scary for people and this is just one more thing you can do to assist in the buying process. Studies show you can close 3 - 4 times as many sales by just adding a money-back guarantee.

Writing a Killer Sales Page / In Closing

Okay, that's just a few things you can do to make your Sales Letters shine. But this is just the tip of the iceberg of what you need to know and do. For some of you, you will never quite get it right and your sales copy will continue to be a hindrance to making a sale. If it was easy, everyone would be making the big bucks, right?
